I both liked and disliked this book. I can definitely see its appeal, but it felt like a written M. Night Shyamalan movie. Just a lot of build-up with no real pay off. Very slow too.
I liked the atmospheric energy Jackson created though. This book did make me interested in reading her other works, so it didn't fall short there. However, I wasn't drawn to the plot much or any of the motivations of the characters.
I thought it was also really predictable? For a book that is labeled as a horror mystery, I was neither horrified nor surprised. I might watch the film adaptation that came out this year though.
This is the fifth book in a row that I haven't rated at least a 3, and I find that very sad. Feeling a bit discouraged now.
